My Personal Dictionary

Young children and special education students love words and are sometimes frustrated by them. They want to be independent and successful. Give each of your students their own "My Personal Dictionary."

Students are asked to sound out the initial letter of the word they seek to spell, so they can look up words they have entered before.

Start at Kindergarten and pass their personal dictionary along to 1st then 2nd grade.

Students enter:

• spelling words
• words they ask the teacher to spell for a personal writing assignment

Teacher writes:

• a word and student illustrates
• a word and student traces over word
